Literacy average score
This indicator shows the average proficiency score in literacy skills, based on results from the OECD's Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). The EU average score is around 270; the lowest country score is around 250 and the highest 290. Literacy is defined as the ability to understand, evaluate, use and engage with written texts to participate in society, to achieve one’s goals, and to develop one’s knowledge and potential. The indicator is also available for the younger population (16-24 year-olds).
Note: For most countries, PIAAC survey was carried out in 2012. Additional three countries were added in 2014: Greece, Lithuania and Slovenia.
