In 2016, the Minister for Tourism approved education and training requirements for vocational qualifications ‘tourist guide’ and ‘mountain guide’. Common training tests for ski instructors are being developed. The new requirements will improve the quality and competitiveness of tourism.

Vocational education and training (VET) has offered tourist guide (EQF level 4 or 5 depending on specialisation) and mountain guide (EQF level 4) qualifications since 2003, the year of adoption of the first list of occupations for VET.

In order to become a guide or instructor a candidate with relevant higher or secondary VET diploma must pass an exam offered by the Ministry of Tourism twice a year. Names of successful candidates are included in the national tourism register. Wearing an official badge during guided tours and ski training is now a requirement.
