How can vocational education and training (VET) thrive in a world shaped by artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and rapidly changing work patterns? In June 2025, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Education, Children and Youth explored this question through EduTrends, an interactive forum dedicated to innovation in education and the exchange of ideas among educators, policymakers and industry leaders.

A flagship event for Luxembourg’s VET ecosystem

In Luxembourg, as across Europe, automation, AI and robotics are transforming professions and reshaping teaching methods. Yet, as participants at the 2025 edition stressed, no digital tool can replace the practical expertise, interpersonal skills and teamwork that define professional excellence.

Opening the event, Minister of Education, Children and Youth Claude Meisch described VET as ‘a powerful gateway to careers full of opportunity and personal fulfilment’ and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving prospects in this field.

The launch evening featured a keynote on the future of VET in the context of digitalisation and evolving work structures. National and international experts then discussed emerging trends, from technology adoption to the evolving role of employer partnerships.

A VET System in transformation

The second day was devoted to hands-on workshops enabling participants to explore challenges and solutions in depth. With a strong focus on equipping young people with future-proof skills and increasing the appeal of technical careers, the sessions addressed:

  • AI applications in skilled trades;
  • inclusion in vocational pathways;
  • mentoring systems for apprenticeships;
  • strengthening school-business collaboration.

These exchanges highlighted the need for VET systems to stay agile, responding to new labour market demands without losing sight of human-centred learning.

Driving momentum for VET in Luxembourg

With its emphasis on innovation, inclusion, and future-ready skills, EduTrends 2025 marked an important step towards shaping VET in Luxembourg for 2030. Nearly 300 participants – primarily educators, but also policymakers, training providers, and students – took part in lively discussions, reflecting a shared commitment to building a resilient and adaptable VET sector spanning policy and practice.

The forum confirmed that technology will remain a powerful driver of change, but success will depend on people’s ability to adapt, collaborate and create value. For Luxembourg, as for other European countries, the challenge is to integrate digital tools effectively while preserving the social and personal dimensions that make vocational careers both viable and rewarding.
