Scope of the project

The Blueprint provides a roadmap for addressing digital, social and green skill needs in the tourism sector in Europe.

Objectives
  • Providing concrete and innovative tools to improve the relationship between industry, education system and public authorities.
  • Taking concrete steps towards sustainability and resilience of the tourism sector.
  • Improving the attractiveness of the tourism careers.
  • Addressing the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the tourism sector.
  • Building and implementing a structural and permanent mechanism to bridge (and minimise) current and future skills shortages, focusing in particular on digital, green and social skills sets.
Short description

The tourism sector requires new business models, creative solutions and the search of opportunities for effecting lasting transformations at the systemic level: putting that into practice requires radical changes in the way we educate, do business, shape policy, and organise the future of tourism and hospitality.

In this context, addressing skills development is fundamental to promoting growth, innovation and competitiveness in the sector, generating employability, and ensuring a quality level of skills for future generations.

The NTG project partnership – involving 14 organisations representing eight European countries – has ensured that the results of the project can be effective and useful for the next generation of educators, decision makers, investors, companies, institutions, students and workers in the field of tourism and hospitality, analysing and developing the sectoral skills with the year 2030 as a landmark on the horizon.

Key findings

There are 6 main outputs produced by the NTG Project:

  1. the Skills Assessment Methodology, a research-based, structural mechanism for the analysis of rapidly changing competencies and skills needs, able to support the tourism industry, education and training providers as well as government bodies to continuously and longitudinally identify, assess, and monitor skills needs.
  2. the Online Skills Matrix, that can be used by professionals, employers, employees, trainers, students, university tourism departments, local authorities, companies, allowing the whole European tourism sector to rely on a very useful tool for empowering and strengthening its human resources.
  3. the Tourism Sector Skills Toolkit, which contains a wide set of resources (lesson plans, presentations and training resources, assessments and marking schemes, blended learning approaches, skills checkers, occupational profiles, mapping documents, case studies, examples of best practice) useful for training providers, educational institutions, employers, HR departments, employees, job seekers, NGOs, government organisations.
  4. the Quality Skills Standards Framework, that illustrates the mechanism of how new skills are integrated into training curricula, helping to recognise the key organisations which influence skills content and delivery.
  5. the Skills Lab, a digital and user-friendly environment giving access to all NTG skills tools, facilitating interaction with end users.
  6. the Blueprint Strategy and Action Plan, which responds to the need to address the rapid evolution of the tourism sector in the EU and to make strategic choices based on collaborative governance between industry, education and government to fill the main foreseeable skills gaps and shortcomings that may occur in the next decade.
