A launching meeting for Cedefop’s thematic country review on apprenticeships in Slovenia took place in Ljubljana on 16 June. The meeting was hosted by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports (MESS) of Slovenia. Representatives of the responsible ministries (education, labour and economy), VET providers and the social partners took part; they represent a group that meets on a regular basis to discuss issues of VET development.
Cedefop’s thematic country review (TCR) on apprenticeships for Italy was launched at an event hosted by the Ministry of Employment in Rome on 6 July. Slovenia kicked off the latest round of reviews in June and a project for Greece will follow in September.
Employment opportunities in Slovenia worsened during the economic crisis. Skills and knowledge contributing to employability may improve individuals’ labour market position. For Slovenia’s small, open economy it is important that the labour force possess knowledge about foreign countries, languages and intercultural skills. Mobility schemes are a way to secure professional development and transversal skills. International mobility in education improves students’ competences and employability, quality of teaching, and cooperation between organisations in different countries (European Commission, 2012).
On 25 and 26 May, members of the country reviews steering groups from Malta, Lithuania, Greece, Italy and Slovenia met in Thessaloniki for a policy-learning exercise. They discussed apprenticeship schemes in their countries, bringing in different experiences and perspectives, and learned more on how the reviews work.
A research study, conducted by the Slovenian Institute of Vocational Education and Training (CPI) monitors where young people six years after enrolling in vocational and technical upper secondary programmes are and which factors triggered their paths.
In March 2014, Slovenia launched the OECD's programme for international assessment of adult competences (PIAAC) data collection. The assessment will be conducted from April to December 2014, where over 5 000 adults aged between 16 and 65 from all Slovene regions will be surveyed. There are 60 trained interviewers who will be closely monitored by the PIAAC data collection team at the Slovenian Institute for Adult Education (SIAE).
The evaluation aimed to highlight key elements of practical training in higher vocational education programmes, collect approaches and good practices in work-based learning (WBL) design, and provide guidance for further development of practical training in work organisations.
In Slovenia, social partners and government institutions cooperate to improve attractiveness and importance of vocational education and training (VET) by implementing effective promotional activities.

The number of young people enrolled in two-year short and three-year vocational upper secondary education fell sharply during the period from 2000/01 to 2011/12 ( ). The total number of young people enrolled in upper secondary education decreased by 23.8% and totalled 79 901 in 2011/12. The decline is due to demographic changes.
