Key data on education in Europe 2005
Eurydice report

Eurydice, the information network on education in Europe, has published the sixth edition of its Key Data on Education in Europe, a study drafted in cooperation with the Statistical Office, Eurostat.

The 2005 edition gives a vast panorama of the way educational systems work and the participation of young people at every level of education in 30 European countries (the 25 Member States, the 3 EFTA/EEA countries, Bulgaria and Romania). Some 153 indicators are divided into six thematic chapters: context, organisation, participation in teaching, resources, educational processes, diplomas and levels of qualification.

The main trends shown by the report are that:

  • more and more children benefit from pre-primary education;
  • more and more students are enrolled in higher education;
  • the number of qualified people in scientific and technological sectors is increasing little by little; - the quality of school education is increasingly assessed;
  • in the new EU Member States, the organisation and the management of the educational systems are very close to those of the EU15;
  • and the inequalities in access to IT equipment and the internet in schools are diminishing.
