Admission of economic migrants

The Commission hosted a public hearing on economic migration which was opened jointly by Vice-President Frattini and Commissioner Spidla. The hearing was a direct follow-up to the Green Paper on an EU approach to managing economic migration which the Commission presented in January this year. The hearing was based on a bottom-up rather than top down approach, bringing together the main stakeholders in this debate, notably trade unions, employers organisations, governments, European Parliament and European Economic and Social Committee, non-governmental organisations, and interested third-countries
