Cedefop community of apprenticeship experts aims at strengthening and expanding the knowledge on apprenticeships in Europe. The voluntary long-term collaboration of community experts amongst themselves and with Cedefop is expected to generate insights on national developments regarding apprenticeships, cover existing gaps in information retrieval from the countries in specific areas of concern and provide the knowledge base for comparative analysis.
Community experts are professionals with solid expertise in the area of apprenticeships. As specialised, stable reference points in their countries, and through their active participation in the community, they are expected to improve the understanding of apprenticeship systems and schemes across countries and ultimately support their quality implementation in Europe.
The objectives of the community are articulated along the following areas:
- Consolidating the knowledge base on apprenticeships in Europe and supporting knowledge sharing about apprenticeship systems and schemes.
- Generating knowledge: identification of research themes, thematic focuses, comparative analyses on specific topics.
- Networking: direct access to national contacts for expertise on apprenticeships, peer learning opportunities.
The common starting point and the tool for the cooperation between experts is Cedefop European database of apprenticeship schemes: this platform is the heart of the community, to which the experts contribute by regular data gathering. By building a common approach, understanding and sharing tools, the experts have the opportunity to engage in knowledge sharing and generation and peer-learning.
Moreover, community experts engage in networking, peer learning activities and generation of new knowledge (research and analysis) on topics commonly agreed.
The community is coordinated and supported by Cedefop, in the context of the project on apprenticeships in work-based learning of the Department for Learning and Employability. Community members are individual experts selected by Cedefop, on the basis of the indications provided by relevant national VET public institutions. The experts contribute to the activities of the community on a voluntary basis, bringing their personal professional expertise and opinion. The community expresses the opinions of their members, therefore does not represent Cedefop officially.
Community’s first meeting was held in Thessaloniki on 17 October 2018 and the virtual launching meeting followed on 13 December 2018. The 2019 annual meeting took place on 8 October 2019 in Paris. The 2020 annual meeting of Cedefop community of apprenticeship experts will take place in the form of a virtual event on Wednesday 16 September 2020. So far, 31 experts have confirmed their membership (one per country or sub-national level in the case of Belgium and the UK).
