The programme, which was introduced in September 2004, allows students to spend two days per week working towards nationally recognised vocational qualifications, including 50 days' work experience, while continuing to follow the core National Curriculum. The programme covers a wide range of professions including engineering, business and administration, social care and sports management.
The most effective partnerships were able to call upon strong local knowledge and expertise to match pupils to placements that suited their chosen career path, and were well supported by local authorities and learning and skills councils.
