Every year, seven vocational schools from across Europe take turns organising the “Young Mechanic” skills competition, which aims to improve cooperation between vocational schools and to compare the skills gained in different countries.
This year the competition was held in Lithuania, while competitors came from vocational schools in Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, FYROM, Slovakia, Hungary and Lithuania; a Turkish delegation participated as guests. The competition consisted of a theoretical part with a test in each of the competitor’s native language and seven practical exercises.

Students gained a new professional and social experience. Not only did they have a chance to show their practical skills and receive a thorough evaluation of their skills but were also able to compare themselves to students from other countries.

Teachers gained a lot of experience while preparing the students for the competition, including evaluating practical exercises that would allow them to compare the skills and abilities of students from different countries.

For school management, the competition was a great opportunity to find out about vocational education and training in other countries, to compare the different ways of preparing the same qualification specialists, and to develop new ways of creating international links.

The competition organiser – the Vilnius School of Car Mechanics and Business – gained valuable experience in organising such international competitions, including the preparion of theoretical and practical tasks and the development of an appropriate evaluation system.

The competition was observed by people from transport inspection companies, lecturers from higher education institutions and participants of previous competitions. It was also widely publicised in the media and has therefore raised the profile in Lithuania both of the car mechanic profession and of vocational education and training. The organisational experience gained will also be used nationally, in organising similar sectoral competitions among Lithuanian vocational schools.
