The 12th ISFOL monitoring report of training actions aimed at fulfilling the right to education and training (XII Monitoraggio ISFOL delle azioni formative realizzate nell'ambito del diritto-dovere) contains interesting data (school year 2012-13) on participation of young people in vocational education and training (VET).

The most important data concern increasing numbers of pupils, with 18% growth in 2012-13 compared to the previous year. Total students enrolled in VET now exceeds 300 000 (I-IV years), 162 000 of which are in three-year courses in schools, 128 000 in accredited training institutes and 9 471 enrolled in the fourth year.

This positive trend is due to an increase in young people enrolled in VET in vocational institutes (school system), while numbers of learners in training institutes (accredited centres) remains stable.

Learners enrolled in three-year courses are interested in a few sectors only, such as: catering industry (especially VET in the school system), with 58 424 learners, and beauty and wellness industry (mainly in accredited training institutes), with 32 240 learners.

Another important result is growing interest in attending a fourth year to acquire a professional diploma. Young people having obtained a qualification in year 2011-12 totals 43 850 (increase of 12.8% compared to previous year), 32 000 of which are in training institutes and almost 12 000 in schools.

The monitoring report was carried out by ISFOL on behalf of the Ministry of Labour to monitor VET trends in Italy. Results derive from two different surveys. The first, of a more quantitative nature, was entrusted to ISFOL by the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Education. It involved all regional administrations and autonomous provinces.

The report also offers a list of new legal provisions and most relevant innovations in secondary education and training and technical and vocational training. Participation in VET is also analysed, as are learner profiles by professional qualification, resources invested and used, and profiles of young people with a qualification awarded by training institutes and schools.
