In 2024, Jobsplus, the public employment service, has been actively developing new training courses towards empowering learners in the green and digital economy. From understanding AI to motivational training for green jobs, these courses aim to skill the workforce towards achieving the twin transition.
With the current focus being on sustainable development and the green economy, Jobsplus has held a number of meetings with various local stakeholders on waste management, sustainable building, sustainable agriculture, and other areas of interest. These meetings and discussions highlighted the importance of equipping the public with green skills, so Jobsplus created several different courses about to green jobs.
Training courses for the green transition
The courses developed for the green transition are offered for free and include:
- organic farming (standalone modules). Each module has a different duration, and an applicant can follow one or multiple modules at the same time;
- digital skills for green jobs. The course is 60 hours long, divided into five modules. Each module has a short one-hour assessment;
- green jobs motivational training. The course is 25 hours long, with one module and a one-hour assessment;
- green skills course (the four challenges experience) is 25 hours long, divided into five modules. Each module has a short one-hour assessment;
- enhancing the environment, social governance culture (ESG). The course is 25 hours long, with one module and a one-hour assessment;
- environmental data management systems. The course is 11 hours long, with one module and a one-hour assessment;
- enhancing sustainable building practices. The course is 30 hours long, divided into four modules. At the end of the fourth module there is a two-hour assessment.
All courses can be offered in person or online, depending on the availability of the trainers and the preference of the applicants.
Training courses for the digital transition
In addition, in August 2024 Jobsplus launched a course on understanding artificial intelligence (AI); it is an introductory course for learners to obtain basic understanding of AI. Given the increased use of AI in today’s world, it is important for everyone to be familiar with what AI is, its uses and its implications.
Despite the availability of online courses, through both private and public education and training institutions in Malta, Jobsplus still felt the need to include this course in its portfolio, free of charge, to cater for the general resident population, vulnerable groups and jobseekers, who might not otherwise have access to such courses.
Through these new courses, Jobsplus aims to educate the public and raise awareness of AI and of the importance of green skills in today’s economy.
