A significant initiative towards the digitalisation of the school environment in Greece is underway. The Greek education minister announced the launch of a new Digital School platform. This pioneering initiative envisions a comprehensive digital portal designed to enhance general and VET education for students, teachers, and parents nation-wide, benefitting particularly the islands and remote regions that make up Greece’s geography.
The Digital School platform, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund (RDF) and regulated by Law 5128/2024, started its pilot phase in September 2024, with first services including:
- digital tutoring: the platform offers video tutorials on core subjects such as language and mathematics. These short episodes, delivered by experienced teachers, cover all secondary school levels, with plans to expand to primary, secondary, and high school curricula for all subjects;
- live tutoring for national exams: third-grade upper secondary students have access to live digital lessons for university entry exam preparation. These sessions offer real-time interaction with teachers and include quizzes and assessment;
- classes for remote areas: a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Digital School caters to students in remote islands and mountainous regions. Classes combine the physical presence of specialised teachers with live digital lessons for subjects not available locally;
- the eParents App: an app that enables real-time communication between parents and schools. It allows parents to receive notifications on students’ absences and grades, access counselling services and schedule meetings;
- interactive learning systems: more than 36 000 interactive learning systems are being installed in schools nationwide. By May 2024, over 20 000 systems had been delivered, enriching classrooms with new digital tools that are transforming teaching and learning;
- interactive whiteboard teaching material: a vast collection of digital learning subjects, digital educational scenarios, and digital lessons will be created, enabling teachers to enrich their lessons with interactive, AI-powered educational resources.
The Digital School platform will gradually expand further to include a broad range of educational and career-related services. These will include vocational training, recognition of qualifications and certifications, and a wealth of digital educational materials such as e-books, publications, and journals. Digital repositories will be further enriched with interactive content, designed to support teaching and learning for all levels of the education community.
Pilot implementation and key features
As the Minister for Education mentioned in September 2024, the first phase of live tutoring for national exams introduces 19 courses in high schools and 26 courses in upper secondary vocational education schools (EPAL). These lessons are delivered from a purpose-built studio within the Ministry of Education, and supported by 79 specially trained teachers. Students can ask questions during the lessons, which will be answered promptly. He also highlighted that the digital tutorial – a core component of the Digital School – offers continuous support to students, allowing for personalised learning pathways and the submission of real-time questions during lessons. The Minister referred to ‘a significant beginning’ taking place, while according to the Ministry of Education, more than 4 000 students have already connected to attend the free, live afternoon digital tutorial classes.
The Recovery Fund will allocate EUR 232 million specifically to the Digital School, with a total of EUR 1.1 billion invested in 25 educational projects across the country.
