The Skills and Jobs of the Future (Compétences et Métiers d’Avenir, CMA) programme is part of the France 2030 recovery and resilience plan. It aims to accelerate the adaptation of training initiatives (needs analysis and development of new programmes) for future-oriented sectors such as decarbonisation and digital technology. Since its launch in 2021, the CMA call for projects has funded over 240 new training projects.
A project aligned with European priorities
Among the funded initiatives, the project DEFFI-TL stands out in the transport and logistics sector, demonstrating how immersive technologies and collaborative innovation can modernise vocational training and enhance safety and sustainability. In response to the twin transitions in transport and logistics, the French Association for the Development of Vocational Training in Transport and Logistics (AFT) is leading the DEFFI-TL project (2022–2026).
The project aims to modernise sectoral training through immersive, hybrid and gamified learning tools, addressing key challenges related to ecological transition, digitalisation and workplace safety. The initiative seeks to enhance the attractiveness and inclusivity of training, equipping learners — from drivers to logistics technicians — with new skills for the green and digital transitions.
A collaborative ecosystem for innovation
DEFFI-TL brings together eight major public and private actors in transport-logistics VET: two training bodies of the professional branch, three 'Trades and qualifications’ campuses in the field of mobility and land transport, and two innovation clusters specialised in cybersecurity. This co-opetition model enables partners to share investments in immersive tools and provide common training for their team of training design specialists, fostering lasting cooperation.
Boosting employability and risk awareness
The project structures its innovation around ten training modules designed to tackle the main transformation challenges in the transport and logistics sector, while supporting learners in accessing to employment and qualification. These include: (1) training on ecological transition and decarbonisation, such as fuel optimisation and alternative energies; (2) modules on logistics digitalisation and cybersecurity; (3) safety-focused learning to prevent workplace accidents and support onboarding; (4) hybrid learning formats to broaden access, especially for employees; and (5) enhanced training attractiveness via gamified and immersive tools. Each module helps attract or retain learners in training, upskill workers, and improve the alignment of vocational pathways with the sector’s evolving needs.
Augmented reality for hands-on learning
At mid-term project, one flagship output is the Vérif-PL, a free and augmented reality (AR)-based mobile application. Simulating real-life inspections using AR, it helps learners master pre-departure safety checks for heavy goods and passenger vehicles: by simulating inspections, including document validation, tyre markings, and mechanical risk detection. The app, both engaging and professional, can be used in classrooms or workplaces and is available both on Google play or on App store. All modules are available as free apps and open educational resources, compatible with national LMS and MOOC platforms.
From pilot to scalable solutions
Public funding from the State covers nearly 70% of project costs, enabling partners to invest in digital tools and immersive equipment. Designed for transferability, DEFFI-TL resources are built for integration across multiple training providers.
