Five years ago, 15 European heads of state and government met in the Portuguese capital and agreed to make Europe "the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world " by 2010.

Conceived as an informal network of economists, businesspeople, citizens and others, the Lisbon Council is here to make that dream a reality. We at the Lisbon Council feel that better, more effective reforms are key to securing Europe's future. We want to take a vital role in the process as it unfolds, encouraging politicians to be bold and to take more effective action. We also want to make the reform process more transparent, helping private citizens understand the personal stake they hold in a better, more competitive Europe. We want to draw on Europe's diversity to define the economic reforms that work, so we can help policy makers draw up a better roadmap for the future.
