Cedefop’s Study Visits team organised an international seminar on how to support young people entering the labour market in Thessaloniki on 28 February and 1 March.

75 participants from a wide array of bodies and institutions from EU Member States and beyond attended this two-day event. They discussed the findings of study visits organised in 2009 and 2010 and many of them presented their own practices to support young people.

Three thematic angles were explored in-depth:
  • How to support flexible learning pathways,
  • How to facilitate transition from education and training to work,
  • What it takes to develop entrepreneurship.

Project presentations and discussions focused on the need to personalise pathways towards individual learning goals through comprehensive guidance provisions, by opening up flexible transition possibilities at all levels of education and training systems and by facilitating the validation of former learning. In this context, special attention was paid to the issue of reaching out to young people who dropped out of school and need to be catered for by combined educational, social and financial measures. Participants also explored the possibilities of enhancing young people’s entrepreneurial skills and competences by creating close ties between the worlds of education and business.
