Primary sector & utilities
This sector covers the major industries of agriculture, mining and quarrying, electricity, gas and water supply as well as sewerage and waste management. These cover:
- the production of crop and animal products (including forestry and logging activities); the extraction of minerals from the earth (coal, oil and gas) including activities that prepare minerals for marketing (e.g. crushing, grinding, cleaning, drying, sorting, liquefying natural gas etc.);
- the supply of water, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning for home and business use including the collection and treatment of water (e.g. from rain, rivers, lakes and wells) production of energy (from generation stations) and distribution of water and energy (through systems such water mains and irrigation canals, gas and electricity lines, poles, meters); and
- the collection, treatment and disposal of various types of waste materials (household and business) as well as the clean-up of contaminated sites (e.g. used oil from shipment or garages, radioactive materials at decommissioned nuclear power stations).
