Description
This article adds to the literature on the time persistence of being Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET) youth. It does so by distinguishing between short- and long-term persistence of being NEET, comparing the situation before (years 2004-2007) to after the Great Recession (years 2013-2016) while focusing on four Southern European countries and disaggregating NEETs by gender. The analysis reveals a convergence in NEET rates by gender in all four member States, due to a worsening of the male NEET rate and in the absence of improvement among female NEETs. It is shown that long-term persistence is smaller than short-term persistence and that the latter increased after the Great Recession, especially for male NEETs.
