European Inventory on validation of non-formal and informal learning - Home

A regularly updated overview of validation practices across Europe, this inventory, compiled in cooperation with the European Commission, closely reflects the European guidelines on validation, published by Cedefop in 2009.

All material is publicly available and can be downloaded from this website.

So far the inventory has been updated four times (2004, 20052008 and 2010). The next version, to be published in late 2014, will include 36 reports for 33 countries (more than one for Belgium and the UK), eight in-depth thematic reports, two case studies, and a synthesis of main findings.

Why do we need a European inventory on validation?

People gain knowledge and skills throughout their lives, often outside the formal education and training system.  They should be able to demonstrate what they have learned, and make use of that learning for their careers and further learning.

Recognising that society at large also has a vested interest in using all available skills, national and regional authorities and sectoral bodies have introduced many arrangements for validation of non-formal and informal learning in the past ten years. Yet information about how such learning is identified, documented, assessed and certified is, in most countries, not easily accessible.

The European inventory aims to address this weakness by making information on current practices – including examples from selected sectors – available to everyone working in the field. The inventory covers all countries taking part in the EU 2020 cooperation process.
