The OECD Digital Education Outlook 2026 analyses emerging research that suggests Generative AI (GenAI) can support learning when guided by clear teaching principles. The Outlook highlights the benefits of GenAI as a tutor, partner and assistant, and synthesises experts’ evidence and insights on the design criteria that make it work for education.

Evidence from the report suggest that using GenAI with pedagogical intent can improve learning and foster skills like critical thinking, creativity and collaboration, education GenAI can moreover improve human teaching while preserving teacher’s agency.

The report also includes a range of policy recommendations addressed to governments and education stakeholders regarding the use of GenAI in educational contexts.
