- This term was coined by the anthropologists Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger in the book Situated learning: Legitimate peripheral participation (1991);
- the main purposes of a community of practice are to share best practices, provide constructive feedback to its members and ensure effective communication and interaction;
- communities of practice can exist in a physical or virtual environment, use online support or discussion groups on social media platforms to share best practices.
