This indicator provides insights into the current and future employment landscape, showing the number of people in each sector and occupation who regularly use specific skills such as literacy, numeracy, manual, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills in their work. The data is derived from responses in the Cedefop European skills and jobs survey (ESJS2), carried out in 2021, which asks participants about the frequency of skill use in their tasks, combined with employment projections for each sector and occupation from the Skills Forecast dataset. The indicator is useful for understanding the demand for specific skills across different sectors and occupations.
The skills measured include:
- Literacy: Basic reading and writing tasks.
- Numeracy: Basic mathematical tasks.
- Manual: Physical tasks involving manipulation of objects.
- Interpersonal: Skills such as giving presentations, teaching, selling, dealing with clients, providing advice, caring, and demonstrating strong interpersonal abilities.
- Problem-solving and innovation: Skills in solving problems and creating new products, services, or work methods.
More details about the measured skills can be found in the ESJS tool, under the Skill demand section.
