Digital intensity measures the extent to which jobs incorporate digital and computerized tasks. The indicator of Digital intensity provides current and future estimates of digital activity across sectors and occupations, by displaying the number of individuals who engage in digital activities at work. The level of digital intensity reflects the digital skills applied by workers. Three levels of digital skills are defined based on the complexity of the digital activities: Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced.
- Basic-level activities: Using the Internet (browsing, sending emails, or using social media), writing or editing text, and preparing presentations.
- Intermediate-level activities: Involve using both basic and advanced functions of spreadsheets and working with job-specific software.
- Advanced-level activities: Include managing databases, programming, and using advanced techniques for AI development.
This indicator offers insights into how digital tasks are integrated into various job roles. Also, it helps stakeholders understand the evolving landscape of digital skills in the workforce, as well as the distribution of digital skills and activities across different sectors and occupations.
The calculations are based on the Cedefop European Skills and Jobs Survey (ESJS2) combined with the Skills Forecast employment projections. More details about the measured digital activities can be found in the ESJS tool, under the ‘Digital activities at work’ section.
