§56 SGB III
To support apprentices who do not live with their parents and whose apprenticeship pay is not high enough to cover the living costs.
The Federal Employment Agency is responsible for the overall management, monitoring and evaluation of the instrument as well as day-to-day operation.
Apprentices who do not live with their parents due to the long distance from home to the employer's location (travel to the employer's location and back home would take more than two hours a day) and whose apprenticeship pay is not high enough to cover the costs resulting from this situation.
The instrument funds only apprenticeship (training within the dual system).
State
It is difficult to ascertain the maximum amount of funding that an apprentice may receive per year as the level of the grant depends on many factors. The amount is estimated at EUR 700 (but it could be higher is some cases).
The funds are disbursed to all eligible applicants on the basis of legal entitlement. The grant is transferred to the learner's account.
Living costs
In 2015, the public funding amounted to EUR 310,000,000. No EU funds involved.
In 2016 and 2015, some 95,817 and 95,774 apprentices benefited respectively.
