Guided Excursion to Petralona and Nea Kallikratia on Friday, 12 June 2009 Print E-mail

The first destination is the cave of Petralona – a unique nook in Greece worth visiting not only to those interested in history and paleontology, but anybody looking for something unusual. From the scientific point of view Petralona is the major palaeontological discovery of the XXth century: the remains of Homo Erectus Petraloniensis inhabiting the European continent, were found here. The anthropological museum of Petralona presents skulls and bones of prehistoric animals, as well as bone and wood ashes 1 million years old, the oldest proof of the use of fire by humans of our days. Stalactites and stalagmites, miraculously created by nature, add to the amazing beauty of this cave.
The excursion ends with a stop at Nea Kallikratia of Chalkidiki, a small picturesque seaside town. Here one will have free time to spend on its own discretion: either to go for a swim at the municipal beach, or visit local souvenir shops, or have something to eat/drink in one of the many local taverns, restaurants, cafés or beach bars.

The excursion has the following indicative time schedule:
15.00 - departure from Cedefop
16.00 - arrival at Petralona
16.10 - guided tour of Petralona Museum and the Cave
17.40 - end of tour and transfer to Nea Kallikratia
18.00 -  arrival to Nea Kallikratia, free time
19.00 - return from Nea Kallikratia – to Thessaloniki

The excursion fee is 45 Euro per person. It is exclusive of the Petralona Museum and Cave admission fee, which is 6 Euro per person which is payable directly to the ticket-office on site.

Finally, it should be noted that a minimum of 20 persons is required for the excursion to be realised.
