On 26 and 27 September 2023, as part of the European Year of Skills, the Ogre Technical School in Latvia hosted the international vocational education forum ‘Planet of skills: renewed perspective on networking potential’. More than 700 experts and practitioners from 72 countries and international organisations participated in the forum sharing their experiences and vision on the latest trends in skill development. The forum was jointly organised by the Latvian Ministry of Education and Science in collaboration with Skillman International and the European Training Foundation.

In their speeches at the opening of the forum, both the Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia Evika Siliņa and the Minister of Education and Science Anda Čakša emphasised the importance of vocational education and training (VET) and its recognition. According to Ms Čakša, Latvian VET should become increasingly open to global processes to ensure its compatibility with future skill needs and economic growth.

The participants discussed trends in skills formation as a response to evolving economic and labour market needs. An important part of the forum's programme was the study visits to Latvian VET institutions. These were hosted by the Riga State Technical College, the Riga Tourism and Creative Industry Technical College, the Riga Art and Media Technical College, the Bulduri Horticultural Technical College, as well as the Latvian Biosciences and Technology University – all demonstrating the progress of Latvian VET towards excellence, green and digital transformation, and innovation and sustainable approaches, including collaboration between industries and the professional secondary and higher education.

The discussions in the working groups of the conference were focused on knowledge co-creation processes regarding future needs in education quality, pedagogical skills today and in the future, the importance of data analytics in the development of human capital, and the role and responsibility of the labour market in preparing qualified specialists.
