Career education was legitimised in the description of the procedure for provision of vocational guidance (Profesinio orientavimo vykdymo tvarkos aprašas), approved in July 2012 by Ministers for Education and Science and Social Security and Labour. It complements vocational guidance and vocational information measures.
The career education programme (ugdymo karjerai programa) is the result of the project ‘Creation and development of models for career education services and their monitoring in general education and VET’ (2010-14). The programme aims to provide conditions for students to develop their career competences necessary for successful selection in further learning, occupation and/or employment. The training programme is designed for students studying in primary, lower and upper secondary education and VET programmes in vocational schools. Career competences cover four areas: self-cognition; career possibilities cognition; career planning and career implementation. Learning outcomes are defined for each area covering attitudes, skills, knowledge and understanding. Each school selects a model for implementation of the programme. The programme may be implemented through its integration into primary, general lower and upper secondary and VET curricula or it can be offered as an optional subject.
