In 2014, to involve employers’ associations in planning, implementation and review of vocational education and training (VET), the Ministry of Education and Science signed collaboration agreements with the following associations: Lithuanian Hotel and Restaurant Association, Lietuvos Aviacija and Infobalt.

The Ministry of Education and Science plans to sign a further five collaboration contracts in the near future. As part of the deal, the associations agreed to work closely on solving issues linked to VET’s legal framework, VET provision, work-based learning including apprenticeship, and provide the ministry with information on demand for specialists and employment possibilities for VET graduates.

The agreement signed with the Association of Lithuanian Aviation Companies (Lietuvos Aviacija) provides for collaboration in training aircraft mechanics. The ministry and the association will cooperate in training these specialists in VET institutions and students will be offered practical placement in respective companies. It is also planned to organise VET in apprenticeship form. Aircraft mechanics’ training will be concentrated in Vilnius and Kaunas.

The ministry and Infobalt, which unites information and communication technologies companies, and science and education institutions, have agreed to collaborate on training IT specialists, an occupation which is particularly popular and demanded by the market. Employers will also contribute to improving Kaunas communication school and Vilnius VET centre of technology and business’ infrastructure and environment.

In addition, collaboration agreements were signed with two progressive companies: GetJar networks and the seed capital fund Nextury ventures. GetJar and Nextury will both directly contribute to training IT specialists in VET schools. Both companies intend to become stakeholders of Kaunas communication school when it becomes Kaunas information technology school. The school is expected to offer three new IT training programmes.
