O

UR FUTURE DEPENDS ON INNOVATION

In a remarkably short period of time, economic globalisation has changed the world economic order, bringing new opportunities and new challenges. In this new economic order, Europe cannot compete unless it becomes more inventive, reacts better to consumer needs and preferences and innovates more.

Europes citizens are concerned by important issues ranging from climate change and the depletion of non-renewable resources to demographic change and emerging security needs, which call for collective action to safeguard the European way of life that combines economic prosperity with solidarity. These legitimate concerns must be turned into an opportunity to enhance Europes global economic

competitiveness. The quicker it can react, the higher the chance of success and the greater prospect that its approach will serve as a global model.

From the protection of the environment through eco-innovation to the improvement of individual well-being through more intelligent infrastructure provision, the Commission is convinced that innovation in a broad sense is one of the main answers to citizens  aterial concerns about their future.
