Results of the second survey on training and occupational outcomes of vocational education and training pathways in Italy (Seconda indagine nazionale sugli esiti occupazionali dei qualificati nei percorsi di IeFP) were published by the Institute for the Development of Vocational Training for Workers (ISFOL) in the first half of 2014.

The survey involved a national sample of 5 000 persons having obtained a VET qualification in 2008-009. These young people were interviewed, through a telephone questionnaire three years after the qualification was obtained.

VET pathways still play a major role in terms of job placement for all young people aged 18 to 24, even though job conditions seem to be less favorable than three years ago. In fact, 50% of young people are employed, 42% are unemployed, 6.6% are engaged in training or learning pathways, and 1.3% are inactive.

Some key results:

  • Training agencies occupational outcomes seem to be more ’solid’ than school-based outcomes (55% of people employed against 38%).
  • Type of employment: most people holding a qualification, are salaried (85.6%); 8% are self-employed and 6.4% have a non-standard (atypical) job contract.
  • Apprenticeship contracts are the most frequent contract type: nearly 35% men and over 39% women are apprentices; one in four has a short-term contract.
  • Of surveyed people, 60% claim their job is totally or partially consistent with their qualification; 62.4% also consider that this qualification is a fundamental condition for the job they have.
  • Young people are highly satisfied with training pathways and outcomes, and VET pathways also have a spillover effect towards additional training opportunities after the qualification.
  • In fact, one in three young people choose further training after the qualification, namely a fourth year in the VET system or, more rarely, in upper secondary school. Reasons seem to be more ’job-driven’: ability to find a more qualified job with another diploma (31%) is the leading reason, even though percentages of ’motivation-driven’ people - mainly a desire to continue studying - is also considerable (29%).
  • Within three years from qualification, numbers of people included in learning pathways decrease by about 3% (6.6%); two thirds engage in university courses.
