The past, present and future of the Community Study Visits Programme, this year celebrating its 20th anniversary, will be the focus of the celebrations on 25 May, held  at the Thessaloniki premises of the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (Cedefop) which organises the programme.

The prime objective of the Study Visits Programme is to encourage exchanges and discussion among those in charge of vocational training, by organising visits of small groups of experts, from 30 countries, to a host country on a specific theme. Τhemes in 2005 include increasing adult participation in training, developing entrepreneurship among young people and methods for assessing the quality of training systems.

On 25 May, those who have contributed to the success of the Study Visits Programme will present their experiences and expound their views on its future implementation.

At the same time, media professionals journalists Luis Jose Garcia Llorente (Foundation Tripartita, Spain), Elisabeth Kukalowska (Le Monde Initiatives, France), Boris Bergant (Radio-Television, Slovenia), Inga Paparde (Neatkariga Rita Avize Newspaper, Latvia) and Wolf Gunter Brgmann (Frankfurter Rundschau Newspaper, Germany) will exchange views on vocational training issues and discuss travel as a means of expanding knowledge and widening cultural horizons.

Three well-known writers will be contributing to the dialogue on the wider implications of the Study Visits Programme: Predrag Matvejevic (member of the high level advisory group formed by Romano Prodi for intercultural dialogue in the Mediterranean), Mr Nedim Grsel, Turkey, winner of the Ipeki award for his contribution to Greco-Turkish friendship, and Greek fiction writer and essayist Takis Theodoropoulos.

In a time of EU enlargement, a key task of the Study Visits Programme is to bring together Member States and candidate countries on issues of training, education and employment with the long-term aim of achieving equal participation by all, both in education and in work.
