More than 150 study visits organisers and participants, national agency representatives, social partners, members of the Lifelong Learning Committee and European Commission officials joined forces on 26 September in Thessaloniki to celebrate the success of the first peer-learning programme in the European Union, which is coming to an end, with the last visits taking place in June 2014.
Cedefop’s conference on work-based learning (12-13 June 2013) gathered more than 150 experts on vocational education and training from around the world, policy-makers from the European Commission and Member States as well as social partners’ representatives.
Some 25 study visits held between 2010 and 2012 focused on helping vulnerable adults tackle the labour market. They discussed, among other things, how to access guidance services; how to make full use of knowledge, skills and competences, and how to get them recognised; how to participate in training, and how to find rewarding employment. This publication collects findings from these study visits, and features 29 successful initiatives from all over Europe.

Specialists attending study visits typically learn a lot about each other’s education and training systems and policy solutions. But how useful is that knowledge when they return home? Can such an experience actually affect policy and practice within a regional or local school system? Rune Knutsen, Education Advisor for the city of Stavanger, shares his story of how a study visit and follow-up seminar helped his department introduce policy changes.
An international seminar organised by Cedefop’s Study Visits team examined how migrants, minorities, older workers and people with lower skills can successfully navigate the challenges of the labour market. A full report is to be published later this year.
