Maive Rute from Estonia has been appointed as the new European Commission SME Envoy. Following on from Finnish national Timo Summa, she will be the Commissions interlocutor for the SME community and their representative inside the Commission. Among her top priorities is the better coordination of SME issues within the Commission, fostering exchange of successful practices under the European Charter for Small Enterprises, the Entrepreneurial Action Plan and giving SMEs better access to EU programmes. The role of the SME Envoy underlines the importance of SMEs for economic growth, jobs, innovation and social stability. Over 25 million SMEs employ around 75 million people and create half of the new jobs in the EU. Almost every policy at EU level has an SME dimension. Above all, the SME Envoy gives the Commission an identifiable face for SMEs.
