A launching meeting for Cedefop’s thematic country review on apprenticeships in Slovenia took place in Ljubljana on 16 June. The meeting was hosted by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports (MESS) of Slovenia. Representatives of the responsible ministries (education, labour and economy), VET providers and the social partners took part; they represent a group that meets on a regular basis to discuss issues of VET development.
Cedefop’s thematic country review (TCR) on apprenticeships for Italy was launched at an event hosted by the Ministry of Employment in Rome on 6 July. Slovenia kicked off the latest round of reviews in June and a project for Greece will follow in September.
A Cedefop delegation visited the Greek Ministry of Education on 13 July to discuss with Greek authorities and social partners the common work in the frame of the thematic country review (TCR) on apprenticeships in the country. Cedefop’s contribution in two more areas of cooperation (hellenic qualifications framework and skills needs diagnosis) was also discussed in the meeting.

Ministers from the European Union Member States, candidate countries, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein gather in Riga, Latvia on 22 June to endorse the new medium-term deliverables for vocational education and training (VET), known as the Riga conclusions.
On 25 and 26 May, members of the country reviews steering groups from Malta, Lithuania, Greece, Italy and Slovenia met in Thessaloniki for a policy-learning exercise. They discussed apprenticeship schemes in their countries, bringing in different experiences and perspectives, and learned more on how the reviews work.
The economic crisis has hit young people particularly hard and more young people face increasing difficulties in setting their foothold into the labour market. Against this context, there is a broad consensus today among policy-makers, social partners and experts that apprenticeships can be an efficient solution to some of the present labour market imbalances and benefit both learners and employers.
By combining study and work, apprenticeships and work-based learning (WBL) can offer them an opportunity to acquire work experience while enhancing skills in close alignment with employer requirements. Because of their inherent relevance for the labour market, apprenticeships and work-based learning can help to reduce skills mismatch and ease transition from education to work.
A Cedefop delegation headed by Director James Calleja took part in a knowledge-sharing seminar with the European Training Foundation (ETF), Cedefop's sister agency, in Turin on 13 February. Apprenticeships, validation and the next stage for European tools were on the agenda.
