The festival of occupations is an example of good practice in vocational guidance. With this innovative event the regional government of the Malopolska region supports students in their education and career choices and enriches their knowledge about occupations. The event is organised by the regional department of education and lifelong learning. Activities are divided into two stages, first, preparing students to participate in the festival and second, organising the festival itself.
Arguing for guidance to ease the integration of third country immigrants into the European labour market may seem untimely given today’s high youth unemployment, but anticipating future developments and informing policy-makers are one of Cedefop’s main tasks.
Five years ago, the senior experts service (SES) initiative VerA (Verhinderung von Ausbildungsabbrüchen - prevention of apprenticeship discontinuation) was launched to avoid training dropouts and improve the training process by intervening quickly to help young people help themselves. The Czech Republic, as well as the entire European Union, is confronted with a lack of employment opportunities for young people. Most companies do not want to recruit graduates due to lack of practical experience. The internships for young job-seekers project provides an opportunity for young graduates to gain working experience and thus increases employability and competitiveness of future graduates on the labour market. The project also aims to promote contacts between employers and potential employees.
There are some 340 different occupations requiring vocational education and training (VET), but boys still preferably want to be automotive mechatronics engineers and girls retail saleswomen.
Cedefop’s priorities and objectives and the Europass platform were presented at a workshop organised by Greece’s state scholarship foundation (IKY) and the national agency for the Erasmus+ programme, on 19 February.
