In a meeting at the headquarters of the European Federation for Welding (EWF) in Lisbon on 27 January, international and welding sector experts discussed the latest vocational education and training (VET) developments and reflected on future scenarios in relation to the European tools and their use in the sector.
The European Commission adopted on 10 June a new and comprehensive skills agenda for Europe. The aim is to ensure that people develop a broad set of skills from early on in life and to make the most of Europe’s human capital, which will ultimately boost employability, competitiveness and growth in Europe.
Spring is usually a busy time for visits – this year, Cedefop received visitors from various countries and institutions, including Athens College, universities from Greece, Finland and France, and two institutions dealing with the validation and recognition of qualifications: the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT) and the Ankara Chamber of Commerce from Turkey.
The latest Cedefop briefing note focuses on national qualifications frameworks (NQFs) in Europe and the developments in the 39 countries cooperating on the European qualifications framework (EQF).
Cedefop Director James Calleja and Head of Department for VET Systems and Institutions Loukas Zahilas had several meetings at the Unesco headquarters in Paris on 5 and 6 May regarding potential areas of cooperation.
EQF level 5 qualifications appeal to learners as they open up prospects on several fronts – immediate employment, career advancement, and further learning.
This study of EQF level 5 qualifications on the basis of learning outcomes reveals much greater complexity, diversity and dynamism than previously assumed.
‘Through systematic research over many years, Cedefop has been analysing how qualifications are awarded and used across Europe and how they support the needs of individuals for lifelong learning, recognition and employability,’ the Centre’s Deputy Director told a European Training Foundation (ETF) conference on making better qualifications, at the European Parliament in Brussels.
In 2014, Cedefop will support cooperation at European level and among Member States to foster the development of apprenticeship-type work-based learning, Cedefop senior expert Loukas Zahilas told a Greek EU Presidency event in Athens.
