Employers who wish to provide apprenticeship to either unemployed persons or unskilled workers and who are approved to have apprentices can apply for the grant. A subsidy to cover part of the hourly wage of an adult apprentice amounts to DKK 30 or DKK 40 (depending on the length of unemployment). The company may receive subsidies up to DKK 1,5 million over a 3 year period.

To ensure that the skills and qualifications of the vocational workforce is continuously raised to a higher level. The scheme has both an employment and educational purpose. It will give adults a better opportunity to acquire vocational training and ensure the unskilled a better foothold in the labour market.

Danish Agency for Labour Market and Recruitment (under the Ministry of Employment) is the government body with the overall responsibility. Local job centres at the municipal level manage the scheme.

Subsidy to cover part of the hourly wage of an adult apprentice through the training period:
- DKK 40 hourly subsidy for unskilled workers and workers with outdated skills with more than 2 months of unemployment as well as skilled workers with more than 12 months of unemployment
- DKK 30 hourly subsidy for unskilled workers and workers with outdated skills with less than 2 months of unemployment as well as unskilled workers who are employed.A company can receive subsidies up to DKK 1,5 million (approx. EUR 200 000) over a 3 year period.
Allocation: Companies apply for the subsidy at the local job centre. The money is transferred directly to companies. Reimbursement principle.

An average budget of DKK 44 250 000 is available for that scheme (DKK 177 000 000 from 2013 to 2016).

No data on the number of benefiting companies is available. In 2013, 2 443 adult apprentices were counted; in 2012, 3 250 adult apprentices under the scheme.

- Recent changes
Substantial changes were made in 2013 regarding the scope of the scheme. Previously, the scheme was limited to sectors with skilled labor shortages and now all sectors are included.
