Consultation Forum on the Future Programme for Active European Citizenship 2007-2013

The Consultation Forum concerning the future action programme 2007-2013 to promote active European citizenship was the second part of an extensive two-stage consultation exercise organised by the Directorate General for Education and Culture. Held on 3 and 4 February 2005, it followed closely the public online consultation of December 2004 to February 2005, to which over a thousand responses were received.

The Forum aimed to build on these already significant results. It attracted the full range of stakeholders, drawing approximately 350 actors and representatives from European civil societys NGOs, think tanks, regional and municipal authorities, European networks, advocacy groups, trade unions and European associations. An invaluable step in the development of the proposal for the new active citizenship programme, its participants seized the two-day event to discuss amongst themselves and with the European Commission the current problems and issues to be addressed, the target users, key goals and potential options for implementation. The major objective of the occasion was therefore to stimulate dialogue and debate, and thereby contribute concrete proposals, recommendations and suggestions for the preparation of the new active citizenship programme, destined to improve and strengthen the current transitional one, in time for the discussions on the financial perspectives 2007-2013.
