From school year 2018/19, five secondary schools have been offering a new technician programme in smart technologies

Robotics, new forms of energy and smart technologies are expanding in many sectors of the Luxembourgish economy, including in the private sphere, creating job opportunities for technicians who require new competences in digitalisation, automatisation, communication and sustainable development. Currently, the numbers of national VET graduates from technician programmes including electronics competences are lower than the demand.

From school year 2018/19, five secondary schools have been offering the new technician programme in smart technologies. In response to the increasing demand of the labour market for a specialised and highly skilled workforce in new technologies, the curriculum of the former technician diploma in electronics has been entirely revised in line with technological evolution, making the branch more attractive for learners.

The new curricula for smart technologies place emphasis on a practice-oriented and project-based pedagogical approach; autonomy and creativity is also fostered. Learners will be able to make the link between information technology, electronic technology and specific domains such as smart and green energy, smart home, e-mobility and communication networks. The content of the curricula has been updated and elaborated by the curriculum team in cooperation with the Luxembourgish Chamber of Trade and the Chamber of Employees [1].

The first two years of this four year programme are based on common curricula and cover the basics of electronics and smart technologies. Starting from the third year each of the five schools will offer a specific two-year programme leading to a specialisation in one of five fields:

  • robotics and automatisation;
  • infotronics;
  • renewable energy;
  • smart energy; and
  • e-controls.

The technician programme in smart technologies will give students direct access to the labour market or allow them to pursue higher technical studies through the achievement of optional preparatory modules.
