Spring European Council to focus on Growth and Jobs

European Heads of State and Government reaffirmed their commitment to boost Europe's employment levels

The 25 EU Heads of State and Government will meet together on 23-24 March for the Spring European Council to exchange their views on major developments in the EU and, more particularly, on the European strategy for growth and jobs.

While traditionally dealing with economic and social issues, the discussions at this years Spring Council will focus mainly on the need to follow through with the commitments made at the 2005 mid-term review of the Lisbon Strategy.

The objective of the meeting is to establish a package of priority measures to be put into place by 2007, providing a firm base on which to launch the second cycle of the growth and jobs strategy. The Council is set to define priority measures in the following fields: investing more in growth and innovation; exploiting the potential of businesses and, in particular, of small and medium sized enterprises; increasing job opportunities with particular emphasis on young people; and defining a new energy policy for Europe. The 25 Heads of State and Government will also assess the national action plans for reform that were introduced by Member States for the first time in October 2005. Gender equality and the need to invest in trans-European networks are also to be addressed.
