The European Commission's 2015 Employment and Social Developments in Europe (ESDE) review, which was presented at a conference in Brussels on 21 January, reveals further positive developments in the EU. Differences between Member States still exist, however, many of them linked to an underutilisation of human capital.
More than 130 experts and representatives of governments, social partners, education and training, and the labour market discussed how technology and workplace change impact on skill needs and how to create partnerships to address skill mismatch at Cedefop’s high-level conference in Thessaloniki on 7 and 8 December.
The new Skills Panorama website, brought to you by the European Commission and powered by Cedefop, is now online. Skills Panorama turns labour market data into useful, accurate and timely intelligence that helps policy-makers in making their decisions on skills and jobs in Europe.
Cedefop, in collaboration with the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA), hosted an expert workshop on skills and skill mismatch on 29-30 October in Thessaloniki.
Many of the skills Europe needs for sustainable economic recovery will be learned at work. According to Cedefop’s new European skills and jobs survey, to overcome skill mismatches, more and better jobs that invest in people’s skills are needed.
At the invitation of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the EU-Latin American foundation (EU-LAC), Cedefop has presented its work on investing in skills in Europe for more growth and better jobs at conferences in Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Peru between April and June.
Despite their advantages as a way of aligning vocational education and training to labour market needs, apprenticeships are underused.
