Cedefop has released new insights on skills and jobs in seven European countries. After several years of development, the agency presents first results of this new type of labour market intelligence, based on information from more than 30 million online job vacancies collected in the second half of 2018 in Czechia, Germany, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy and the UK.
The General Council for Vocational Training (Consejo General de Formación Profesional, CGFP) – an advisory body where education and labour authorities responsible for VET work together with trade unions and employers’ associations – has set up several working groups to boost the VET system. It has several objectives: improving productivity, competitiveness and business innovation; contributing to the employability of young people and adults; and reactivating the social lift towards attractive, well-paid intermediate qualifications.
The recently appointed ministers of education and vocational training and of labour, migration and social security have presented their respective departments’ plans of action before Congress.
Vocational education and training (VET) in Spain, although small in terms of volume of students and graduates, has examples of excellence as in the case of the Basque Country. Transforming vocational training to respond to changes arising from the so-called fourth industrial revolution was discussed at the international congress Anticipating the future that gathered some 1 100 specialists from 47 countries in San Sebastian in May 2018. Jorge Arévalo, regional Deputy Minister for vocational training, highlighted in his speech When the improbable happens, the features that make the Basque Country VET system unique, supporting high student employability in programmes related to industrial branches.
In May, the National Office of Vocational Education and Training and Adult Learning (Novetal), Cedefop’s Hungarian ReferNet partner, and the State Foundation for Training in Employment (Fundae), Cedefop’s Spanish ReferNet partner, welcomed ReferNet colleagues and members to partnership forums jointly organised with Cedefop.
Expanding the budget of the erasmus+ programme could provide further impetus to the number of VET mobility projects, says Spain´s education minister who is asking the European Union to multiply by a factor of 10 the budget allocated for the programme in 2021 to 2027.
ReferNet Spain participates in and supports awareness-raising actions organised in the Valencia region, promoting vocational education and training among students, teachers and companies.
November 2017 marks the fifth anniversary since dual VET was first introduced in Spain and developed through ‘training and apprenticeship contracts’ established by law (Royal Decree 1529/2012).
Around 77.3% of the country’s companies offered some kind of training activity to their workers in 2015, an increase from 65% in 2010. The share of workers who attended a training course also rose from 45.4% in 2010 to 52.2% in 2015. These are the results of the continuing vocational training survey carried out every five years by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security among enterprises with five or more employees.
