Until 2014, establishment of 42 sectoral practical training centres (SPTC) is foreseen; two of them have already opened on wood technologies and the furniture production sector.

SPTCs are being established according to the National practical VET resources development programme (2008) on the basis of the Sectoral practical training centres concept (2007) and the Development programme (2008). First contracts for the establishment of SPTC were signed in 2009. The establishment of centres is funded by the 2007-13 Cohesion promotion operational programme and the national budget. Allocation of EUR 116 million for the establishment of SPTCs is foreseen.

The main aim of SPTCs is to assure that learners gain practical skills matching labour market needs, using the latest technologies and equipment. These centres will be open to students from VET, higher education institutions, employees from sector enterprises, vocational teachers and others. The centres will concentrate on technologies in specific sectors.

When creating SPTCs, investment focuses on efficiently operating schools which will be obliged to implement quality-related changes. These include implementation of modular training programmes, increase of continuing vocational training services, regular updates of qualifications for trainers and education managers, and implementation of quality management systems.

In 2012, the SPTC on wood technologies opened at Kaunas builders training centre (Kauno statybininkų rengimo centras). The furniture making SPTC opened at Ukmerge technology and business school (Ukmergės technologijų ir verslo mokykla).
