The first national conference on dual education took place on 22 November 2017 in Sofia. Participants discussed their vision for the development of dual education as a way to restructure the national VET system in Bulgaria over the years to come.

The audience included policy and decision makers, representatives of Bulgarian and foreign companies, school principals and VET teachers, education experts, chambers of commerce and employer organisations, branch and industrial chambers, trade unions, NGOs and young people. The conference was organised by the Ministry of Education and Science in partnership with the European Commission Representation in Bulgaria, on the occasion of the European vocational skills week.

Three key projects were presented during the conference: the Bulgarian-Swiss project DOMINO and the projects of the German-Bulgarian Chamber of Industry and Commerce and Advantage Austria, the Austrian Trade Commission in Bulgaria. In the DOMINO project, over 800 students in 32 vocational schools across the country (Sofia, Pleven, Ruse, Dobrich, Burgas, Yambol, Sliven, Kazanlak, Stara Zagora, Plovdiv, Pernik, Kyustendil, Sevlievo, Zlatitsa, Varna, Sandanski, Troyan, Radomir and Panagyurishte) are enrolled in a dual form of education ‘learning by working’, gaining work experience in more than 170 leading Bulgarian and foreign companies.

The conference was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev, the Minister of Education and Science Krasimir Valchev and Ambassadors of Switzerland, Austria and Germany (Denis Knobel, Roland Hauser and Herbert Salber), as well as Ognian Zlatev, the European Commission Representative in Bulgaria.
