The second peer learning activity of the Thematic working group on professional development of VET trainers will take place in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) on 28-30 May 2013. The event was hosted by the Forem, a public provider of vocational training in Wallonia.

The participants discussed opportunities for professional development of in-company trainers that are provided by the state, sectoral, professional associations and for the validation and recognition of prior learning and competences acquired by trainers on the job. The host organisation presented their work on developing a competence profile for in-company trainers while representatives of companies shared their views on the role of in-company trainers and on the ways to support the development of their competences.

Improving continuing professional development of in-company trainers should be considered in the broader context of the increased policy attention to the need to equip people with job-specific and transversal skills that contribute to productivity and innovation of European enterprises and to improve training opportunities for working adults. The efforts to revitalise, establish or strengthen apprenticeship programmes also require that in-company trainers have necessary competences.

In its recent publication, ‘Trainers in continuing VET: emerging competence profile’, Cedefop analysed and presented competence standards and certification, including the validation and recognition of prior learning, of trainers in VET and adult learning that have recently been developed at national, sectoral and company levels in some countries. Competence requirements were also discussed by the Thematic working group during its peer learning activity in 2012. Most certification procedures are supported by training programmes that allow trainers to acquire new competences and/or update the existing ones to the required level.

The Thematic working group is working towards collecting good practice and developing guiding principles on the changing roles, competences and professional development of trainers in VET, as indicated in the Bruges Communiqué(Council of the European Union; European Commission, 2010)
