Analysing skill mismatch

Cedefop investigates skill mismatch and skills obsolescence in Europe. It does so to help policy makers detect skill mismatch problems so that they can prevent them. The project aims to explore how different trends shape skill needs, how learning contributes to skill supply and to what extent Europe suffers from skill mismatch. [more]

Integrating skills and the world of work (24/04/2012) new

In cooperation with the University of Kingston's Centre for Research in Employment, Skills & Society (CRESS), Cedefop held a workshop on Skill mismatch and firm dynamics on 27 April in London.

The aim of the workshop was to examine what companies do to make sure their employees have the right skills – both at the recruitment phase, and during the course of employment.

The mismatch between skills and jobs does not affect everyone in the same way. Cedefop’s most recent research paper, ‘Migrants, minorities, mismatch? Skill mismatch among migrants and ethnic minorities in Europe’ shows that migrants from outside the EU typically find jobs beneath their real skills level (‘overeducation’), while ethnic minorities are more likely to lack the educational level required by jobs (‘undereducation’).

Director Aviana Bulgarelli presented the results of Cedefop’s latest forecasts on the projected demand and supply of skills up to 2020 at a conference held in Brussels on 4 February 2010. The conference, New Skills for New Jobs: Action Now, focused on the findings of the expert group set up in March 2009 to advise the Commission on how to put the New Skills for New Jobs initiative into practice.
